Origin and history

The Savignéen Museum was founded in 1974 in Savigné-sur-Lathan, Indre-et-Loire. Its initial collections were built with donations and some purchases, laying the foundation for a heritage dedicated to palaeontology and local history. The institution has gradually grown to become a place for the conservation and enhancement of the region's fossils and traditional trades.

In 2006, the acquisition of the Hartmann collection, made up of 10,000 samples, marked a turning point in the museum's development. This acquisition was followed in 2012 by that of the Quétin collection (3,500 samples) and in 2016 by that of the Merchant collection (3,000 samples). These additions significantly improved the paleontological presentation and enriched the museum's reserves.

The Savignean Museum is distinguished by a large collection of fossils dating back about 15 million years, as well as reconstructions of ancient tower interiors and exhibitions on the history of local crafts. These elements make it a reference point for understanding the natural and cultural heritage of Savigné-sur-Lathan and its surroundings.
