Origin and history

The Musée du Vieux Saint-Chamas, located in the immediate vicinity of the commune of Saint-Chamas (administrative address), bears since 10 March 2000 the name of Paul Lafran, founding president of the association Les Amis du Vieux Saint-Chamas. This museum, labeled Musée de France, covers various thematic fields: archaeology (prehistory, protohistory, Gallo-Roman and Paleo-Christian period), fine arts (drawing, painting), ethnology (costumes, trades, religious practices), and local history. Its collections include military objects, archives, photographs, musical instruments and tools related to navigation or ground transportation.

The museum halls highlight archaeological excavations conducted by Paul Lafran, a room dedicated to local life (traditional clothing, religious documents, testimonies of Saint-Chamas's belonging to the land of Arles), and a painting room presenting contemporary representations of the city as well as 19th century ex-votos. Particular attention is paid to the mention of the powdering of Saint-Chamas, a landmark in local industrial history. The objects exhibited reflect both the material (tools, ceramics, textiles) and intangible (collective practices, religious memory) heritage of the region.
