Origin and history

The Romanesque house of Provins, located on 12 rue du Palais in the upper town, is one of the oldest civil buildings preserved in the commune. Dating from the 12th century, it illustrates medieval domestic architecture of the region. Its facades and roof were classified as historical monuments by decree of 11 October 1941, thus recognizing its exceptional heritage value.

Currently, the Romanesque house houses the Provins and Provinois Museum, which presents collections related to local and regional history. This museum, associated with the label "Musée de France", allows you to discover the medieval past of Provins, a UNESCO World Heritage city for its remains and its historical role in trade fairs in the Middle Ages.

The building is managed by an association and remains a rare testimony of 12th century civilian habitat in Île-de-France. Its location in the upper town, the historic heart of Provins, reinforces its importance in the urban and cultural landscape of the municipality.
