Origin and history
The MuCEM originated in ethnographic collections gathered in 1878 at the Trocadéro Museum in Paris. These funds, supplemented by field surveys conducted by the Georges-Henri Rivière team, were designed to create a synthetic museum combining a study gallery for researchers and a cultural space for the general public. The project's vocation evolved to encompass Europe and the Mediterranean, leading to the transfer of collections to Marseille, where they were supplemented by the deposit of the European fund of the Museum of Man.
Today the museum is structured around three major sites: a contemporary building designed by Rudy Ricciotti (opened in 2013), Fort Saint-Jean – a listed historic monument – and a conservation and resource centre located in the Belle de Mai district, a work by architect Corinne Vezzoni. This innovative museographic system allows Mediterranean cultures to be approached from a multidisciplinary perspective, combining ethnology and history.
Labeled "Museum of France", MuCEM is distinguished by its synthesis collections on French and Mediterranean ethnography. Its implantation on the J4 esplanade, in an architectural dialogue between military heritage (St John's Fort) and contemporary creation, makes it a symbol of the cultural revitalization of the Marseille coast. The accuracy of its geographical location, however, remains poor (note of 5/10), perhaps reflecting the challenges associated with its sea-side location and spread at several sites.
