Origin and history
The Jouve Museum was founded in Cavaillon by Michel, Auguste and Marie-Thérèse Jouve shortly before World War II. This museum was born from the will of this bourgeois family to preserve the heritage and memory of their city. Their unique approach was to meticulously archive any document or object bearing witness to their time, from press clippings to private correspondence, photographs and books of accounts.
The house that houses the museum is itself a historical testimony. Former residence of the last rabbi of the Jewish community of Cavaillon in the 18th century, it then became the place of commercial activity of the Jouve before turning into their principal residence. Today, it illustrates the interconnection between the intimate history of this family and that of the territory, providing an overview of their way of life, social relations and cultural tastes.
The museum is distinguished by its exceptional photographic background and its varied collections, covering decorative arts, fine arts, ethnology and history. These elements reflect not only the life of an affluent 19th century family, but also their commitment to safeguarding a common heritage. Their heritage includes everyday objects, family archives and traces of their public engagement, making the museum an intimate and collective place of memory.
