Origin and history

The Daniel Pouget Museum of Civilization was founded in 1964 from local historical and religious objects. Originally centered on regional heritage, it was enriched in 1967 by the donation of Madeleine Rousseau, an art historian, who offered an African art collection, thus reorienting his vocation towards extra-European civilizations. This change marked the beginning of a specialization in ethnology, with pieces from Africa, Asia, America and Oceania.

Under the direction of Daniel Pouget (1964-2000), the museum was expanded thanks to travel and donations from travellers or co-workers. Local collections, including objects classified as the chasuble of Saint Rambert or a reliquary-monstrance, coexist with international funds. The building, a former priory of Saint-Rambert transformed into a pleasure house in the 18th and 18th centuries, now houses a remarkable collection of ethnographic and artistic objects.

The museum benefits from the label Musée de France and is distinguished by its African background, especially from West Africa, as well as by pieces from several continents. His official address, Place Madeleine Rousseau in Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert (Loire), reflects his local anchor while emphasizing his openness to the world. However, the accuracy of its geographical location is considered poor (note 5/10).
