Origin and history

The Musée de la ferblanterie, housed in a late 19th century workshop house in Vissac-Auteyrac, is the only one in France entirely dedicated to white iron objects. It brings together two collections bequeathed to the commune of Saint-Arcons-d'Allier, enriched by major acquisitions. These collections, composed of several hundred domestic, military, religious or playful objects (chocolate moulds, barrates, milk buckets, toys, sacred art objects), cover periods from the 17th and 18th centuries to the contemporary era. Their value lies less in their market rarity than in their educational and ethnological interest, illustrating the daily and artisanal uses of white iron throughout the centuries.

The museum highlights the technical and industrial evolution of white iron, notably thanks to a collaboration with Sollac (a subsidiary of Usinor Sacilor), which presents the modern qualities of this material, such as its 100% recycling. This dialogue between the past and the present allows us to understand the economic and cultural importance of ironmaking, while stressing its roots in local traditions. The building itself, typical of the region, adds a heritage dimension to the visit, as a witness to the rural architecture of the Haute-Loire.

Ranked as Musée de France, the establishment offers a dive into missing or transformed occupations, religious and collective practices, as well as industrial history. The objects exposed, often modest but rich in teaching, reflect the daily lives of local people, while documenting know-how today at risk. The geographical accuracy of the museum remains approximate (location noted 5/10), with addresses associated with Saint-Arcons-d.
