Origin and history

The Intermunicipal Museum of Nogent-sur-Marne is an establishment dedicated to the local history of the "loops of the Marne", located in the east of Paris. It offers a permanent exhibition on this theme and an annual temporary exhibition focusing on the east of Paris or the Île-de-France. Since 2018, it has been managed by the Établissement Public Territorial ParisEstMarne&Bois, becoming an intermunicipal museum.

Founded in 1962 by Mayor Roland Nungesser, the museum finds its origins in the exhibition "If Nogent was told" (1958), which gathered testimonies about the city's past. Originally installed in the Hotel des Coignard (eighteenth century building housing Police and Justice), it was transferred in 1992 to 36 Gallieni Boulevard, where it shared space with the municipal library. His official inauguration took place in 1994 by Jacques Toubon, then Minister of Culture.

The first curator, Louis Vel-Durand (son of Henri Vel-Durand, Mayor of Joinville-le-Pont), formed the collections by acquiring objects related to Nogent-sur-Marne and the east of Paris. After his disappearance in 1974, Jean Roblin succeeded him and modernized the museum, making an inventory and enriching the acquisitions. In 1992, Olivier Maître-Allain took the lead and developed a permanent presentation on the loops of the Marne. Vincent Villette has been the curator since 2013.

The museum organizes temporary exhibitions, as planned in 2024-2025 on Willy Ronis and the eastern suburbs. Each exhibition gives rise to the publication of a booklet since 2014, available online. The catalogues, like the one dedicated to Ferdinand Gueldry (2018-2019), testify to its vocation to enhance local and regional heritage.
