Origin and history

The Musée de l'Aventure du Son originated in the legacy of Armand Nogues in 1994. This former mayor of Saint-Fargeau and industrialist specialized in metal frames offered his personal collection, allowing the creation of a museum dedicated to the phonograph. The town hall was transferred to host this collection, and the museum was inaugurated in 1995 as the Phonograph Museum, exhibiting apparatus from the Nogues legacy.

In 2000, the Conseil Général de l'Yonne enriched the collections by acquiring a set of phonographs, radios and mechanical musical instruments gathered by Michel Héliez. These pieces, originally exhibited at the Musée du Phonographe et de la Radio in Lanobre, were deposited at Saint-Fargeau. This acquisition strengthened the museum's reputation, positioning it as a European reference for the history of sound and radiophony.

Located in a former 17th century convent in the heart of Saint-Fargeau, the museum now offers more than 1,000 objects, ranging from barbaric organs to pioneer inventions of Edison or Pathé. Daily demonstrations of mechanical instruments (organs, pianolas) and digital audioguides in French and English complete the visitor experience. A ludo-educational approach is also offered to young audiences via dedicated tablets.

The museum highlights the technological evolution of sound, from the first experiences of Cros and Branly to modern devices. Its label Musée de France and its location in a historic building make it a major cultural place in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, combining architectural heritage and technical innovation.
