Origin and history

The Musée du Prieuré is housed in a historic building in Harfleur, Seine-Maritime, Normandy. This monument, also known as the former Portuguese hotel, was a medieval inn. Today, it houses a museum dedicated to archaeology and local history, offering an overview of the region's cultural heritage.

The facades and roofs of the priory were classified as historical monuments by order of 6 May 1959. This classification reflects the architectural and historical importance of the building, which is now protected and preserved. The museum, managed by the municipality, is part of the Musées de France and contributes to the development of local heritage.

Although the museum is often associated with the city of Gainneville in some sources, official information, including those from the Merimée base and Monumentum, confirms its location in Harfleur. The building, located at 78 rue de la République, is a remarkable example of medieval architecture and its re-use for contemporary cultural uses.
