Origin and history
The Napoleon Bridge is an emblematic building of Corneville-sur-Risle, located in the department of Eure in Normandy. Built in the 19th century, it allows the crossing of the mill canal and the Risle, connecting an island formerly accessible only by a ford. His name pays tribute to Napoleon III, emphasizing his anchor in the history of the Second Empire.
Construction of the bridge began in 1857 thanks to a subscription launched by the local owners. The project, designed by architect Dennoel, was adopted in 1862 and completed in 1867. The work is distinguished by its two arches in basket cove, its brick vaults and its circular beaks protecting the batteries. A medallion adorned with a "N" recalls his connection with Napoleon III.
A characteristic of the achievements of the Bridges and Chaussées under the Second Empire, the Napoleon Bridge was restored in 1998 and 2004. It was listed as a historic monument on October 31, 2007, recognizing its heritage and architectural value. Today, there remains a testimony of 19th-century engineering and local history.
The bridge is located at the place called La Fosse, on the commune of Corneville-sur-Risle. Owned by the municipality, it is open to the public and is a key element of the Norman river landscape. Its precise coordinates place it near the 2 Way of the Virgin, according to the cadastral and GPS data available.
