Origin and history

The Necropolis of Ormes-Simander is a major archaeological site of the late Bronze Age, about 800 B.C., situated on horseback in the communes of Ormes and Simandre in Saône-et-Loire. It consists of 24 tumuli arranged in two parallel lines, oriented according to the bed of the Saône, revealing a structured funeral organization. This site illustrates the ritual and social practices of the protohistoric populations of the region, marked by burial under artificial terres.

The tumulus n°11 was excavated in 1912, providing a first glimpse of the archaeological remains preserved. The necropolis was listed as a historic monument on 24 April 2007 and was classified on 16 May 2014, protecting some of the parcels and remains that they contain. A second classification order, dated March 20, 2015, extended this protection to other sections of the communes of Ormes and Simandre, highlighting the heritage importance of the site.

The parcels concerned, specified in the decrees, cover cadastral land in the two communes, including archaeological remains still buried. The location close to the Saône suggests a link with the river communication routes of the time, essential for the exchange and displacement of protohistoric populations. Today, the site remains an exceptional testimony of human occupation in Burgundy-Franche-Comté during the Protohistory.
