Origin and history
The protohistoric and Gallo-Roman necropolises of Brumath are a historical monument located in the forest of Brumath, in the department of Bas-Rhin (Alsace, Grand Est). This funerary site, whose archaeological significance is recognized, was listed as historical monuments by order of 9 October 2015. It covers several cadastral parcels (86, 87, 88) and constitutes a fully protected archaeological reserve.
The period of construction of these necropolises dates back to Protohistory and Gallo-Roman times, reflecting the funeral practices of local populations over centuries. The site is now owned by the municipality of Brumath. Although architectural details are not specified in the available sources, its inscription demonstrates its heritage value and the need to preserve this vestige of ancient times.
In the protohistoric and Gallo-Roman era, necropolises played a central role in the social and religious organization of communities. They often marked the boundaries of inhabited territories and served as a place of collective memory. In the Alsatian region, these archaeological sites offer valuable insights into the cultural exchanges and lifestyles of local populations, gradually integrated into the Roman Empire.
