Niche-oratory (Case AB 112): entry by order of 18 March 1970

Origin and history

The niche-oratory of Léry is a historical monument located in the commune of Léry, in Côte-d'Or (Department 21), in the region Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 17th century, it is located precisely at 27 rue Principale, according to the available coordinates. This small religious building, typical of rural oratories, was listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 18 March 1970, under the cadastral reference AB 112.

Today it belongs to the municipality of Léry, although its state of conservation or accessibility are not detailed in the sources. The oratories and niches-oratories, frequent in French countryside from the 17th century, often served as places of devotion for the inhabitants, marking paths or village entrances. In the Burgundy context of the time, these monuments reflected a religious practice rooted in daily life, linked to processions, collective prayers or symbolic protections against epidemics and calamities.

Burgundy, a region marked by a rural and wine-growing economy, saw these buildings as spiritual and community landmarks. Léry's niche-oratory is part of this tradition, although the available archives do not specify its sponsor or exact iconography.
