Origin and history

Cazilhac's noria is a water wheel about 5.50 metres in diameter, continuously operated by a stream current. Built probably between 1871 and 1872, it follows the acquisition of the land by its owners. Its mechanism is based on sixteen vessels that fill at stream level, then drain into a pipe at the top of their trajectory, allowing irrigation of the surrounding land.

Classified Historical Monument by decree of November 13, 1980, this noria is a rare testimony of traditional hydraulic techniques of the late nineteenth century. It is located on the Plaine irrigation canal, in Cazilhac, in the Hérault department. Its state of conservation and functioning make it a remarkable example of the Occitanian agricultural industrial heritage.

The available coordinates place the noria near the site 5399 Condamine and the Cambiniers, with a location considered very satisfactory (note 8/10). Although the practical information on visits is not specified in the sources, its classification makes it a protected part of the local heritage, linked to the agricultural and technical history of the region.
