Origin and history
The Maison des Fossés Tanarès is an emblematic building located in Argentan, in the department of Orne, Normandy. Built between the 14th and 15th centuries, it is distinguished by its typical Norman architecture, with a square plan and a superimposed wood system. The building, which would have served as a former tannery, illustrates medieval construction techniques, including the corbelling of the upper floors on the lower floors.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 29 November 1948, this house is an architectural testimony of local history. It is close to the Dukes Castle, strengthening its importance in the historical heritage of Argentan. The structure, with its posts at the height of one floor and its well-worked frames, reflects the craftsmanship and know-how of the medieval era.
The house is now owned by the municipality of Argentan. Although its current use (visit, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the sources, its listing as a Historical Monument guarantees its preservation. Its exact address, 7 rue des Fossés-Tanarès, makes it easy to locate it in the historic centre of the city.
