Origin and history
The Notre-Dame-de-Belloc chapel, also known as the Belloch chapel or Santa Maria de Bell-Lloc in Catalan, is a Romanesque religious building located in Dorres, in the high plain of Cerdagne (Pyrénées-Orientales). Its name, meaning "beautiful place", comes from its exceptional location at 1,685 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the region. Mentioned for the first time in 1260, it embodies Cerdan Romanesque architecture with its semi-circular bedside and its bell tower-wall with three bays, comparable to other local churches like Saint-Fructuous de Llo.
The present building, built in stone and granite, dates mainly from the 13th century, although repairs took place in the 18th and 19th centuries. The unique nave, extended by a cul-de-four vaulted apse, houses fragments of painted decorations (rins, foliage) probably added during restorations. The southern Gothic-style gate and the small irregular bell tower reflect these periods of transformation. An inscription engraved in 1765 on the wall of the abside attests to work on that date.
Ranked a historic monument in 1980, the chapel illustrates the religious and cultural heritage of Cerdagne, marked by its Catalan history and mountainous isolation. Its present state, with adjacent ruins and a facade partially dug into the rock, bears witness to its evolution over the centuries, between partial abandonment and preservation. The property now belongs to the municipality of Dorres.
