Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Saint-Dizier, a 13th-century Gothic building, was founded in 1202 by Guy II of Dampierre and Bourbon. Initially in the heart of the city and attached to the diocese of Châlons, she suffered damage during the siege of Charles Quint in 1544. Louis XIII ordered his repair in 1634, as evidenced by the balls embedded in the tower and a commemorative inscription.

A devastating fire in 1775 ravaged much of Saint Dizier, requiring a major reconstruction of the church. The town entrusted the works to architect Darsonval (1779-1782), then Philippe d'Orléans financed the reconstruction of the choir (1788-1790) under the direction of Joyeuse. During the Revolution, the building became a temple of Reason, losing statues and liturgical objects, before being restored to Catholic worship after the Concordat of 1801.

The current architecture combines Gothic elements (three portals, square tower) and 18th century additions. The nave, with three vessels and four spans, was modified after 1801 with the removal of its ceiling. The church is home to notable works: a 16th-century tomb-laying, 19th-century stained-glass windows (including a series dedicated to the Assumption in 1895), and a classified organ, originally from the abbey of Larritour, rebuilt by Cavaillé-Coll in 1862 and inaugurated by Camille Saint-Saëns.

Two recent fires marked its history: that of April 15, 2019, destroying frame and arrow, and a minor incident in 2025, without structural consequences. Classified as a Historical Monument since 1942 (portal), then in total in 1990, it illustrates the vicissitudes of a religious heritage rooted in local history.

Among his particularities, the door of Mercy, opened during the Jubilee of 2015-2016 at the initiative of Pope Francis, highlights his contemporary spiritual role. The sculptures (Vierge à l'Enfant du XVe siècle, Saint Nicolas du XVIe) and the stained glass windows, offered by the 19th century corporations, reflect its rich artistic and artisanal heritage.
