Origin and history

The church Notre-Dame-de-l'Étang de la Méde is a religious monument located in the commune of Châteauneuf-les-Martigues. Although its name evokes a proximity to a body of water (the pond of the Mede), the available sources do not specify its exact origin, its construction period or the circumstances of its foundation. This type of building, often central in Provençal villages, could serve as a place of worship, community gathering or geographical landmark for residents and travellers.

In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, medieval or modern churches played a key role in structuring rural areas. They were generally associated with agricultural activities, local pilgrimages or community-specific religious traditions. In Châteauneuf-les-Martigues, as in other villages in the region, these monuments also reflected the importance of surrounding natural resources, such as ponds, often exploited for fishing or salt production.
