Origin and history

The parish church of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges is a Catholic religious building located in Cilaos, on the island of La Réunion. Built between 1937 and 1940, it replaces a primitive church erected in 1858, which became too small for the growing population. This project was born from the collaboration between Father Paul Boiteau, parish priest of Cilaos from 1934, and engineer Francis Huet, who designed a building entirely of reinforced concrete, innovative for the time. The church was consecrated in 1950 by the bishop of Port-Louis, marking his anchor in local spiritual and community life.

The interior furniture, made by the carpenter Irénée Accot, the first mayor of Cilaos, was completed in 1942, adding a local craft dimension to the building. From a basilical plane, the church is distinguished by its side stands, its little overflowing transept, and generous natural lighting thanks to high windows. It was listed on the Historic Monuments Inventory in 2000, including its base, recognizing its heritage value. A carillon was added in 1996 and a major renovation took place in 2006, preserving its original architecture.

The church is part of a historical context marked by the development of the Hauts de La Réunion in the 20th century, where religious infrastructures played a central role in social cohesion. Cilaos, an isolated mountain circus, saw his economy based on agriculture and thermalism, with the church as a major gathering place. The choice of reinforced concrete reflected technical modernity, while the participation of local artisans, such as Accot, highlighted the community anchor of the project.

The construction of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges also illustrates the influence of the spiritans, a missionary congregation active in La Réunion, of which Father Boiteau was a member. Their role in education (through the small adjacent seminary) and parish life has long marked the religious landscape of the island. The building, still in operation, remains a symbol of the resilience and architectural adaptation to the geographical constraints of the Réunion circuses.
