Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame-en-Saint-Melaine, located in Rennes in Ille-et-Vilaine, is an emblematic monument of Brittany. Its origin dates back to the sixth century, when Saint Melaine, the first bishop of Rennes, was buried there. An abbey was founded on its grave around 550, and rebuilt several times after fires and destruction, especially in the 7th, 10th and 11th centuries. The current building, composite architecture, combines Romanesque (XI century) and Gothic (XIV century), with a classic 17th century facade.

It became a pro-cathedral between 1803 and 1844, replacing St. Peter's Cathedral in Rennes, destroyed at the end of the 18th century. It was embellished in the 19th century by parish priest Meslé, who added a statue of the Virgin, an organ and a cross path. Ranked a historical monument in 2013, the church preserves remarkable Romanesque remains, such as the bell tower and capitals exhibited at the Musée de Bretagne. His 20th century stained glass window, dedicated to Saint Melaine, is considered a masterpiece.

The Abbey, founded by Benedictines in the 11th century and reformed by the Maurists in the 17th century, played a central role in the religious history of Rennes. The relics of Saint Melaine, scattered during the Viking invasions (X century), were partially restored in the 11th century. The site also houses a 17th-century cloister and convent buildings transformed into episcopal palaces. The church, now parish, bears witness to more than 1,500 years of history, from the Christian origins of the city to its present architectural heritage.

Major changes include the reconstruction of the choir in the 14th century, the elevation of the bell tower in 1855, and post-Second World War restorations. Modern stained glass windows, such as that of Jean Le Moal (1956), illustrate a non-figurative Pentecost, marking an artistic evolution in religious buildings. The organ, originally built by Cavaillé-Coll in 1874, was restored in 2011. The monument remains an active place of worship and a symbol of Rennes heritage.

The abbatial site, including the church, the cloister and the convent buildings, was a major spiritual and political centre. Commodoatary abbots, like John d'Estrades (17th century), marked its history, as did conflicts, such as the War of Succession of Brittany (14th century), which damaged the abbey. Today, the architectural ensemble, protected and maintained, offers a panorama of the styles and epochs that shaped Rennes.
