Origin and history

Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor de Nîmes Cathedral, located in Place aux Herbes, is an emblematic monument of the Occitan religious heritage. Consecrated at Castor d'Apt, it serves as the seat of the diocese of Nîmes, Uzès and Alès. Its history extends from the 7th century to the present, with archaeological traces revealing a primitive church and sarcophagi attesting to constant funeral use until the 12th century.

Excavations in 1920 revealed the remains of a 7th century church, partially covered by Romanesque construction. In the Carolingian era, an episcopal group dedicated to the Virgin, Saint Stephen and Saint John was erected, including an atrium reused as a cloister in the Romanesque and Gothic periods. Capitals of this period are now preserved at the Archaeological Museum of Nîmes.

The present cathedral is the result of three major phases. A first Romanesque church, consecrated in 1096 by Pope Urban II, preserves elements such as a sprocket wall with Lombard arches and a triangular pediment adorned with biblical bas-reliefs. Damaged during the Wars of Religion (1567, 1621), she lost one of her bell towers. A classic reconstruction in the 17th century, led by architects Didier Laguiolle and Pierre Levesville, gave it its current structure: a unique vessel with arched lateral chapels.

In the 19th century, architect Henri Antoine Révoil transformed the interior into Romano-Byzantine style (1877-1882), adding monumental decorations. The cathedral was listed as a historical monument in 1906 and was elevated to the rank of minor basilica in 1882. Its organ, built in 1643 by the Eustache and restored in the 19th century, has been classified since 1968.

The façade combines Romanesque elements (carved fronton, archatures) and classical additions, such as the neoclassical portal of 1822, erected for the visit of the Duchess of Angoulême. The Baroque chapel of the Rosary, an extension of the choir, illustrates the artistic influence of the seventeenth century. Today, the cathedral also houses a paleo-Christian sarcophagus and the tomb of the cardinal of Bernis.

Its 40-metre-high bell tower dominates the city. Although modest in size (55 meters of nave), it embodies almost a thousand years of religious history, between conflicts, reconstructions and artistic embellishments.
