Key figures

Colonel Driant - Military Commander Died in this area in 1916.

Origin and history

Colonel Driant's command post is a concrete field work built in 1915 during the First World War. It is located in the Bois des Caures, in the heart of the Verdun forest, in the commune of Moirey-Flabas-Crepion. This monument has been classified since June 5, 1931, because of its historic role in the fighting of February 1916.

On 21 February 1916, at 7.15 a.m., German artillery launched an intensive bombardment on this area, with 1500 pieces firing continuously until 4 p.m. This assault was intended to allow the advance of three German army corps on an 11 km front. Between 21 and 24 February, the French resistance was organized around the Bois des Caures, where Colonel Driant died.

This command post symbolizes the violence of the fighting in Verdun and the determination of the French troops. Its classification as a historical monument bears witness to its memorial importance. Today, there remains a place of memory of the Great War, accessible in the federal forest of Verdun.
