The potter's workshop in full (Case AI 141): registration by order of 2 November 1987
Origin and history
The Offemont potter shop is one of two known sites for the production of sigillate ceramics in Franche-Comté. Exploited in the second century, it is distinguished by the remarkable conservation of its buildings and ovens, dedicated to the manufacture of ceramics and building materials. The excavations revealed a work area bounded by ditches containing late-first-century cooking failures, providing valuable evidence of Gallo-Roman craftsmanship.
Located in a wooded environment under high-voltage lines, the site is threatened by deforestation practices. This vulnerability motivated his official protection by order of 2 November 1987, covering the entire workshop (cadastre AI 141). The authorities are considering a thorough search, or even a comparative study of the furnaces, to deepen knowledge of local production methods and their evolution.
Although the precise location is approximate (level 5/10 depending on the sources), the address chosen is the 5 Allée des Charmilles in Offemont (Belfort Territory). Owned by the municipality, the site is not explicitly open to the public, but its status as a Historical Monument makes it a major archaeological heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, illustrating the economic importance of pottery workshops in the region during the Antiquity.
