Origin and history
The Old Bridge of Béziers, classified as a historical monument in 1963, is an emblematic example of 12th century Romanesque architecture. Built or rebuilt before 1134, it is mentioned in an act of that year, with an initial width of 3.45 meters, corresponding to its lower vaults. It served as the only crossing point on the Orb between Provence and Toulouse, playing a major strategic and commercial role in the region.
Over the centuries, the bridge has undergone several transformations. It was expanded in the 15th century by enveloping arches, raising its width to 5.20 meters between the heads. Significant repairs were recorded in 1341 and 1526. A defensive tower, located on the outskirts side, was demolished around 1768. The bridge, 241.46 metres long, has 15 uneven arches, seven of which cross the Orb on the road. Its batteries, equipped with triangular spurs, and its girdles in the middle facilitate flood flow.
Historical sources, such as the letters patent of Charles VII and Louis XI, underline its character "of great age, sumptuous and grand edifice". These royal mentions bear witness to its political and symbolic importance. Today, the bridge remains a major vestige of the medieval and reborn heritage of Béziers, managed by the municipality and protected for its architectural and historical value.
Ranked as historical monuments since June 18, 1963, the Old Bridge illustrates medieval construction techniques and their subsequent adaptations. Its features, such as uneven arches and superimposed vaults, reflect the technical and hydrological challenges of the time. The bridge thus embodies nearly nine centuries of urban history and engineering in Occitanie.
