Cross of the cemetery of Graissac (former): inscription by order of 15 April 1942

Origin and history

The ancient cross of the Graissac cemetery, located in the territory of the municipality of Lautrec, is a remarkable religious monument. It is distinguished by its two carved faces: one representing Christ on the cross, the other the Virgin with the Child. These motifs, typical of Christian art, emphasize its role both funeral and devotional in the local community.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 15 April 1942, this cross now belongs to the municipality of Lautrec. Its designation as historic monuments reflects its heritage value, although its precise location remains approximate (level of accuracy estimated at 5/10). The cross illustrates the importance of religious symbols in the public spaces of Occitan villages, where such monuments served as spiritual and social landmarks.

The region of Lautrec, integrated into the former Midi-Pyrénées (now Occitanie), was historically marked by rural and artisanal life. Cemetery crosses, like Graissac's, played a central role in funeral rituals and collective memory. Their presence often reflected the influence of the Church in the organization of communal spaces, while offering artistic support to believers.
