Origin and history
The old Senlis horse post is a building built between the second half of the 15th century and the first half of the 16th century. Located at 39 rue Vieille-de-Paris, this building illustrates the civil architecture of the late medieval period, marked by the development of communication networks and relays for travellers and merchants. Its partial inscription in the Historical Monuments (decree of 6 October 1975) specifically concerns facades and roofs, highlighting their heritage value.
At that time, Senlis — then integrated into Picardie (now in the Hauts-de-France) — was an active city on the commercial routes linking Paris to the northern regions. Horse posts played a key role in the logistics of travel, welcoming messengers, merchants and pilgrims. Their presence reflected the growing importance of economic and administrative trade under the Old Regime. These facilities, often located near urban centres, also facilitated the transmission of news and supplies.
The monument, as recorded in the Merimée base, enjoys an approximate location (level of accuracy estimated at 5/10), with an address confirmed by GPS coordinates. No information is available on its current accessibility (visits, services) or possible contemporary uses (rent, accommodation). Legal protections are limited to external elements (cadastre AB 85), without mention of recent interior developments or restorations.
