The old lock of the Porteau; the Vivier Bridge (Rural Road No. 1); the Pont du Pommier on the Way of Lays at the Cross Givraud: inscription by decree of 27 July 1988

Origin and history

The works of art on the Canal de la Taillée are distributed between the communes of Notre-Dame-de-Monts and La Barre-de-Monts, in Vendée (Pays de la Loire). These structures, whose construction extends mainly to the 18th century, bear witness to the hydraulic engineering of the period. Their role was essential for the management of water and trade in this marshy area of the Atlantic coast.

Among these works, the Pommier Bridge is particularly remarkable. Listed as a Historic Monument by order of 27 July 1988, it illustrates the heritage importance of these developments. Owned by the commune, it forms part of a wider set linked to the economic and social history of the region, marked by agricultural and maritime activities.

The location of the works, between Notre-Dame-de-Monts and La Barre-de-Monts, reflects their integration into a landscape shaped by water challenges and traffic needs. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the old techniques of wetland control, characteristic of coastal areas in western France.
