Origin and history
The Sollies-Toucas Puppetum, located in the Var department, corresponds to a protohistoric site characterized by the remains of a enclosure. This type of monument, typical of the Protohistory, generally served as a refuge or strategic control place for local populations. The remains still visible today, although partially preserved, attest to the defensive and community importance of this site at a time when societies were in full territorial and social structure.
Protohistory in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur was marked by intense cultural exchanges and an increasingly hierarchical social organization. Oppidas, such as Sollies-Toucas, played a central role in protecting resources and inhabitants, while serving as gathering points for economic and religious activities. Their location, often in height, reflected a desire for visual domination and defence against external threats.
These sites are essential markers for understanding settlement dynamics and interactions between communities of the time.
