Origin and history
Mondrepuis is one of the largest protohistoric fortified sites in Picardie, extending over 35 hectares. Its defensive system, consisting of ramparts, ditches and a built-up entrance, as well as the archaeological furniture discovered, attests to a continuous occupation from the Neolithic to the Gallo-Roman period. These features bring him closer to major sites such as Gouvieux or Villeneuve-Saint-Germain, although his scientific notoriety remains less.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 23 May 2014, the oppidum is protected in its entirety, including the cadastral parcels of the place called Le Câtelet. The site, now privately owned, illustrates the strategic importance of oppidas during the Protohistory, serving as both a refuge, a political centre and a forum for local populations. Its location in the present department of Aisne (the Hauts-de-France region) makes it a key marker of ancient human occupation in Picardia.
The available sources, including the Monumentum database and the Merimée data, underline its role in understanding the territorial dynamics between the Neolithic and Roman times. However, the accuracy of its current location is considered fair (note 5/10), and its access remains restricted due to its private ownership status. No information is provided on any tourist visits or valuations of the site.
