Oppidum de Castelvielh (Box BC 39, 40, 42 to 54): entry by order of 20 December 1979
Origin and history
The oppidum of Castelvielh, located in the commune of Sainte-Anastasie in the Gard, is a major archaeological site dating from the second period of the Iron Age and the Gallo-Roman period. This monument, inscribed in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 20 December 1979, covers a precise cadastral area (cps BC 39, 40, and 42 to 54). Its location, although documented in the Merimée database with an administrative address in Sainte-Anastasie (Insee code 30228), has a geographical accuracy that varies according to the available sources.
The oppida, like that of Castelvielh, were fortified squares characteristic of the late Iron Age in Europe. They often served as refuges, political, economic or religious centres for Celtic populations before and during Romanization. In the regional context of the present Occitanie, these sites played a key role in exchanges between local communities and Mediterranean influences, particularly with Roman colonization.
The official protection of the oppidum in 1979 underlines its heritage importance, although the practical information concerning its visit or access is not detailed in the available sources. Archival data, such as those of Monumentum, indicate institutional recognition, but the concrete elements of its current state or tourist use remain limited.
