Origin and history
Magalas, located in the municipality of the same name in Occitanie, is an archaeological site whose origins date back to the Iron Age (periods 1 and 2) and extend to the Gallo-Roman period. This type of fortified site, typical of the Celtic peoples, served as a refuge and a place of community life, often perched on heights for defensive reasons. The remains discovered suggest a lasting occupation, marked by cultural and economic exchanges with the Mediterranean populations.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 20 November 1979, the oppidum covers several cadastral plots, indicating a significant extent. Although available sources (such as Monumentum) do not specify architectural details or found artifacts, its ranking underscores its heritage importance. The approximate location, noted as "a priori satisfactory", places the site close to the current centre of Magalas, in the department of l'Hérault.
This type of oppidum played a central role in the territorial and social organization of the protohistoric communities of the region.
