Origin and history
The Camp de Saint-Evroult is a historic monument located in Gesnes-le-Gandelin, in the Sarthe department, in the Pays de la Loire region. This site, dated from the Gallo-Roman period, is a typical example of fortifications built during this period to serve as a refuge or strategic control place. Oppidas were often political, economic and religious centres for Celtic communities before and during Romanization.
The legal protection of this site was formalized in 1982 with portions of the oppidum classified or listed as a Historic Monument. The decrees of 21 June 1982 and 28 September 1982 preserved specific parts of the site, identified by cadastral plots. These measures reflect the heritage importance of the oppidum, although its precise location remains approximate, as indicated by the map accuracy estimated at 5 out of 10.
The site is located in the municipality of Gesnes-le-Gandelin, whose Insee code (72141) confirms membership in the department of Sarthe. Although the practical information on the visits or services offered is not detailed in the available sources, its status as a Historic Monument suggests a marked archaeological and cultural interest. The data are mainly from the Merimée database and Monumentum, without reference to other complementary sources.
