Origin and history

The opidum of the castle Meignan is an ancient fortified habitat whose remains still remain today. Located in Saint-Jean-sur-Mayenne, in the department of Mayenne, it dominates the Mayenne valley, about 1.4 km north of the village. This site illustrates the strategic importance of oppida, often located on heights for defensive and territorial control reasons.

A part of the oppidum, located at the place known as the Bois Testards (Cadastral Park A 433), was classified as historical monuments by order of 3 December 1984. Other portions, spread over several places (Le Bois, La Hyaule, Le Champ de la Hyaule, Les Vallées, Le Champ du Château and Le Bois Testards), were registered on the same date. These protections reflect the heritage value of the site, although its detailed history and exact construction period are not specified in available sources.

Administrative data confirm its connection to the commune of Saint-Jean-sur-Mayenne (code Insee 53229), in the arrondissement of Laval and the Pays de la Loire region. The site is referenced in the Merimée base, which facilitates its identification and location, although the mapping accuracy is considered poor (level 5 of 10). No information is provided on its current accessibility or possible tourist vocations.
