Origin and history
Magalas is a historical monument located in the Herault department in the Occitan region. This archaeological site bears witness to a continuous human occupation during the Iron Age (phases 1 and 2) and the Gallo-Roman period. Its classification by decree of 20 November 1979 underlines its heritage importance, particularly for the remains preserved on cadastral plots D 63, 80 to 96, and 102.
The oppida, typical of the late Iron Age, were fortified squares playing a central role in the social, economic and defensive organization of the Gallic communities. In Magalas, this site probably reflects an occupation related to regional exchanges and the transition to Romanization. The location, although specified as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), remains approximate, with an address referenced at 21 Rue de la Paumelière.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its status as a Historical Monument without providing further details on its specific history or archaeological discoveries. The lack of practical information (visit, services) suggests a site that is potentially not open to the public or under study.
