Oppidum protohistorique (cad. AR 68; AS 10): inscription by order of 17 August 1978
Origin and history
The Olonzac Protohistoric Oppidum is a major archaeological vestige of Iron Age 2, located in the Herault department in the Occitan region. This site, registered as a Historic Monument, bears witness to the human occupation and defensive or community structures of this protohistoric period. Its location near the present municipality of Olonzac suggests a strategic role in the exchange or protection of local populations.
Oppidas were fortified sites characteristic of the late Iron Age in Europe. They often served as refuges, political or economic centres for Celtic or Iberian communities. At Iron Age 2 (about 450-250 B.C.).
These sites reflected a complex social organization, with artisanal, agricultural and commercial activities. Olonzac's oppidum is in this context, although the specific details of its use or population remain partially documented.
