Fountain public du 18s : classification by decree of 22 June 1920
Origin and history
Orange Public Fountain is an iconic monument to the city of Orange, in the department of Vaucluse. Built in the 18th century, it embodies the hydraulic architecture of this period, marked by the importance of water points in Provencal cities. Its classification as a historic monument by decree of 22 June 1920 bears witness to its heritage value and its role in local urban history.
The public fountains of the 18th century in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur had an essential function: to supply the inhabitants and animals with water, while serving as a place of sociability. In Orange, as in other cities in the region, these works also reflected the know-how of local artisans and the stylistic influences of the time. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the daily organization of the former communities.
The fountain is located Place du Bois, a central location that suggests its past usefulness for the population. Owned by the municipality, it is protected for its architectural elements characteristic of the eighteenth century. Its exact address, 6 Place des Frères Mounet, and its Insee code (84087) confirm its anchoring in the Valuclusian territory, rich in historical heritage.
