Oratory (Doc. NO CADASTRE): Registration by order of 25 June 1970
Origin and history
The Grozon Oratory is a religious monument built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, located in the commune of Grozon, in the Jura department (39). This small building, typical of the rural oratories of the period, was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 25 June 1970. Today it belongs to the commune and is distinguished by its location in the centre-bourg, at 1 Grande Rue.
The location of the oratory is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), although the sources do not specify its current use (visit, worship, or other function). The oratories of this period often served as places of devotion for the inhabitants, marking a spiritual or memorial gathering point in the villages. Their modest architecture generally reflected the means of local communities, while meeting specific religious or social needs.
The building is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 39263, attached to the arrondissement of Lons-le-Saunier in Franche-Comté (today Burgundy-Franche-Comté). No information is available on any sponsors, architects or specific historical events related to its construction.
