Oratory of Saint-Sylvestre (cad. A 671): Order of 24 November 1930

Origin and history

The Oratory of Saint-Sylvestre is a religious building located in the commune of Plouzelambre, in the Côtes-d'Armor department, Brittany. Built in the 17th century, it embodies the typical architecture of Breton oratories of this period, often linked to popular devotion and local religious practices. Its precise location, close to the Tredder road, makes it a historic landmark for the town.

Ranked as historic monuments by order of November 24, 1930, this oratory is recognized for its heritage value. Official protection underlines its importance in the Breton cultural landscape, although available sources do not specify the exact reasons for this classification. Owned by the commune of Plouzelamber, there remains a symbol of local heritage, without its current use (visit, worship, etc.) being clearly documented.

In the 17th century, Brittany was marked by a strong religious identity, with a multiplication of devotional buildings such as oratories, calvaries or sacred fountains. These constructions reflected the piety of rural communities, often organized around dynamic parishes. The oratories served as places of prayer, gathering or stopping for pilgrims, playing a central social and spiritual role in daily life. Their preservation today offers a material testimony of these ancestral practices.
