L'oratory : inscription by decree of 14 April 1947

Origin and history

The Oratory Notre-Dame-de-Liesse d'Eppe-Sauvage is a religious building located in the commune of Eppe-Sauvage, in the department of Nord (59), in the Hauts-de-France region. Built in the first half of the 19th century, it embodies the architecture and local devotion of that time. Its registration as a Historic Monument by order of 14 April 1947 bears witness to its heritage value and its importance to the community.

The Oratory is located along the departmental road 83, also known as the old road of Solre-le-Château. Its location, although noted as having poor accuracy (level 5/10), remains a landmark for residents and visitors. Owned by the commune, it illustrates the role of small religious buildings in rural life from the north to the nineteenth century, often linked to popular devotional practices and local pilgrimages.

Such oratories generally served as a place of prayer and assembly for the inhabitants of villages. In the context of the Hauts-de-France in the 19th century, these monuments reflected Marian piety and religious traditions rooted in rural communities. Their presence along roads or paths also marked stages for travellers or pilgrims, thus strengthening the social and spiritual ties of the time.

The inscription of the Oratory in 1947 underscores its historical and architectural interest. This classification has preserved this heritage, which is often modest but significant, and which bears witness to the religious and cultural life of the French countryside. Today, there remains an element of the local landscape, although its current access or vocation (visit, worship, etc.) is not specified in the available sources.

Available data, notably from the Merimée database and Monumentum, confirm its status as a protected monument. However, little detailed information is provided on its specific history, possible sponsors or related milestones. This often reflects the case of small rural buildings, whose history is confused with the wider history of local religious practices.

Finally, the approximate location of the oratory, indicated as being at 1 A Chemin de Nostrimont, allows to situate the monument in a precise geographical setting. This address, combined with GPS coordinates, provides a basis for subsequent searches or visits, although the accuracy of these data is considered poor according to the sources consulted.
