Confrérie de Saint-Roch et Saint-Sébastien - Religious organization Managed the nocturnal sacraments for the population.

Origin and history

Ajaccio was built in 1599 outside the city walls, responding to an urgent spiritual need. At the time, because the gates of Ajaccio were closed at night, the population could not access the sacraments at the cathedral. The fraternity of Saint-Roch and Saint-Sébastien, responsible for providing these night services, establishes its seat there. This social and religious role reflects the urban constraints and devout practices of Renaissance Corsica.

Architecturally, the oratory illustrates the mannerist style, marked by a vaulted nave and a deep choir adorned with a studded master altar. Corinthian columns, surmounted by an interrupted pediment, frame the altar, while flat pilasters and a thick cornice beat the lateral walls. Two side chapels, accessible by arches, complete the space. Modified in the 18th century, the building retains traces of its initial use, while integrating later stylistic changes.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1985 (decree of 6 September), the oratory is now owned by the municipality of Ajaccio. Its inscription bears witness to its heritage value, linked to its religious history and its characteristic architecture. The exact location, Cardinal-Fesch Street, and its state of conservation underline its anchoring in the Ajaccion urban landscape, between collective memory and artistic heritage.
