Oratory Saint-Sébastien: inscription by order of 1 December 1980

Origin and history

The Oratory Saint-Sébastien is a religious monument located in the municipality of Bonneval-sur-Arc, Savoie. Built in the 17th century, it embodies the architecture and local devotion of this period. Its registration as a Historical Monument by order of 1 December 1980 bears witness to its heritage value recognized by the authorities.

Bonneval-sur-Arc, a mountain village located in the Alps, was in the 17th century a place of life marked by agriculture, breeding and transalpine trade. The oratories, often erected on the edge of roads or in hamlets, served as places of prayer and protection for the inhabitants, reflecting a religious practice rooted in everyday life. These buildings also played a social role, bringing together isolated communities at high altitude.

The Saint-Sébastien Oratory, owned by the municipality, is today a vestige of this cultural and spiritual heritage. Although its exact location is approximate (precision estimated at 6/10), it remains a point of interest for local history. Available data from the Merimée database and Monumentum confirm its protected status and belonging to Savoyard territory in the former Rhône-Alpes region (now Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes).
