Origin and history

Saint-Antoine de l'Envers is a religious building located in the territory of Bessans, in Haute-Maurienne. This type of monument, often modest, served as a place of devotion or a stop for the inhabitants and travellers crossing the Alpine valleys. The oratories, typical of mountainous regions, reflected popular piety and marked the landscape of spiritual landmarks.

In the Alps, and particularly in Savoie, oratories were integrated into the daily life of rural communities. They played a social and religious role, bringing together the faithful, while embodying a form of cultural resistance to difficult climatic and geographical conditions. Their presence also attested to the importance of local pilgrimage routes or communication routes, although the sources lacked to specify their exact use in Bessans.
