Origin and history
The Oratory of Saint-Étienne-du-Grès is a religious monument built in the 16th century. Originally located in the commune of Tarascon before being attached to Saint-Étienne-du-Grès, it bears witness to the Provencal devotional architecture of that time. Ranked a Historic Monument by decree of 7 November 1922, it now belongs to the municipality and remains a significant remnant of the local heritage.
The location of the Oratory at 43 Avenue Notre-Dame du Château reflects its integration into the urban and religious landscape of Saint-Étienne-du-Grès. Although the sources do not specify its current use (visits, rentals, etc.), its ranking in 1922 underscores its heritage importance. The accuracy of its geographic location is estimated as "passible" (note 5/10), indicating an approximate knowledge of its exact location.
The Bouches-du-Rhône, a department to which Saint-Étienne-du-Grès belongs, was in the Renaissance a dynamic region marked by cultural and commercial exchanges. The oratories, often erected on roadsides or in passageways, served as spiritual stops for travellers and residents. That of Saint-Étienne-du-Grès is part of this tradition, although its specific history remains partially documented.
