Origin and history

The Chaumercenne cross-oratory is a religious monument erected at the beginning of the seventeenth century, more precisely in the first quarter of this period. It is distinguished by its Virgin of Mercy carved on the anterior face of the base, as well as by an oval cartridge and an inscription dated 1625 on its side faces. Although the cross itself was damaged, the base and its decorative elements remain, offering a testimony of the religious art of the time.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 15 January 1980, this cross-oratory is located in the commune of Chaumercenne, in the department of Haute-Saône. It belongs to the municipality and is precisely at 9 Grande Rue. Its classification excludes the modern cross that overcomes it, highlighting the heritage importance of the base and its original sculptures.

The cross-oratories, frequent in the French countryside, often served as spiritual or commemorative landmarks. The one of Chaumercenne, with its inscription of 1625, illustrates the importance of Marian devotion in the region at that time. These monuments also reflected local religious practices and community organization around places of worship, in a rural context marked by a strong influence of the Catholic Church after the Council of Trent (1545-1563).
