Origin and history

The International Mixed Masonic Order "Human Right" was born in 1901, evolving from the first mixed obedience founded in 1893 by Georges Martin and Maria Deraismes. This initiative was aimed at promoting equality between men and women in Freemasonry, a revolution in a then exclusively male environment. The original name, "Grand Loge Symbolique Scottishe de France: Le Droit humaine", reflected this ambition of inclusion and social justice.

The initiation of Maria Deraismes in 1882 by the "Free Thinkers" lodge of Pecq marked a turning point. Although controversial, this approach laid the foundation for a mixed freemasonry. After years of preparation, the first mixed obedience was officially installed on April 4, 1893, with Deraismes as president. Georges Martin, his partner in this struggle, played a key role in the international structuring of order.

The current headquarters, located at 5 rue Jules-Breton in Paris, was built between 1912 and 1914 on the plans of architect Charles Nizet. Ranked historic monument in 2013, this building is inspired by Egyptian architecture, in vogue after the Universal Exhibition of 1900. Its facade, decorated with palmiform columns and Masonic symbols such as the motto Ordo Ab Chao, embodies the values of order: equality, universalism and peace.

The Order has developed internationally, with federations in more than 60 countries. It is distinguished by three pillars: mix, internationalism and the complete practice of 33 degrees of the ancient and accepted Scottish Rite. Its Supreme Joint Universal Council, created at the beginning of the twentieth century, guarantees initiatory and doctrinal coherence throughout the world.

Successive leaders, such as Marie-Georges Martin (1903-1914) or Danièle Juette (2007-2012), have perpetuated the feminist and humanist heritage of the founders. Today, the Order continues to defend women's rights and secularism, while preserving its historical heritage, including this Parisian seat full of symbols.
