Origin and history

The necropolis of Ormes-Simandre is a protohistoric archaeological site located in the communes of Ormes and Simandre, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This site consists of 24 tumuli arranged in two parallel lines, close to the bed of the Saône. These graves date from the end of Bronze Age, marking a period of transition to Iron Age.

The tumulus n°11 was the subject of archaeological excavations in 1912, revealing elements not yet detailed in the available sources. The necropolis was listed as historic monuments on April 24, 2007, and was classified on May 16, 2014, highlighting its heritage and archaeological importance.

This type of necropolis reflects the funeral practices of protohistoric societies in the region, often linked to sedentary communities organized around major rivers such as the Saône. The tumuli served not only as a burial site, but also as territorial and symbolic markers for these populations.

The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a historical monument and its precise location, although some archaeological details remain to be deepened. The necropolis is part of a wider landscape of protohistoric sites of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, reflecting the ancient human occupation in this region.
