Origin and history
The Saint-Joseph Hospital is a former hospital located in Tence, in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Founded in the 17th century, it is linked to the congregation of the nuns of Saint Joseph, established in 1650. The current building, built of irregular granite, reflects a sober architecture typical of the town houses of the time.
The pharmacy adjacent to the hospice, which dates back to the first half of the 19th century, is a remarkable part of the site. Its interior decoration in woodwork, characteristic of this period, led to its registration as historical monuments by order of 21 June 1999. This ranking highlights its heritage and architectural importance.
The site, now owned by the municipality of Tence, illustrates the local hospital and religious history. Although its initial vocation has evolved, it remains a testimony of the social and health organization of the region in the nineteenth century, in a rural context marked by modest but functional structures.
