Ossuaire (cad. A 334): inscription by order of 19 March 1926

Origin and history

The Ossuary of Plelan-le-Petit is a 17th-century funeral monument located in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. Originally, he was backed by the wall of the cemetery of the commune, before being moved in 1937. This small building is distinguished by an architectural characteristic: a roof entirely built of stone, a rarity for this type of monument.

The ossuary was recognized for its heritage value and listed as historic monuments by order of 19 March 1926. This official protection underlines its importance in local and regional heritage. Today, it remains owned by the commune of Plelan-le-Petit, and its current location is at 31 Rue des Garennes, according to the available coordinates.

Ossuaries, common in Brittany, historically served to store the bones exhumed from cemeteries to free space. Plélan-le-Petit illustrates this traditional funeral practice, while at the same time testifying to local artisanal know-how, especially by its stone roof. These monuments also reflected the community organization around places of worship and collective memory, often linked to parish churches or Breton parish enclosures.
