Ossuary (former) attached to the church (Box E 176): inscription by decree of 23 November 1987

Origin and history

The ossuary adjacent to Bettborn Church is an 18th-century historical monument. Located in the municipality of Bettborn, Moselle (Department 57), it has been listed as a Historic Monument since November 23, 1987. This type of building, often linked to churches, was used to preserve the exhumed bones of cemeteries, a common practice in rural communities of the time.

In the 18th century, Ossuaries played an important role in the management of burials, particularly in areas where space was limited. They also reflected the religious beliefs and funeral practices of the time, while meeting health needs. In Bettborn, as in other villages in Lorraine, these monuments were often built near churches, symbolizing the link between spiritual life and memory of the deceased.
